THE WEEKLY KNIGHT
===================
(for July 17, 1993)
When Judit Polgar won the 1991 Hungarian Super Championship,
she broke a record that many thought would last for a very
long time--Bobby Fischer's mark as the youngest Grandmaster
in history. But, incredibly, not even two years later, it
looks like Judit's record--15 years and 4 months of age--is
poised to fall.
The latest prodigy to appear on the scene is much less of a
media star than either Fischer or Polgar. Although the
western world has barely heard of 13 year old Hungarian IM
Peter Leko, all that will undoubtedly change if he achieves
one more GM norm over the next year.
Despite his youth, Leko already has a world of tournament
experience behind him. Since he began competing at age 11(!),
his best result was perhaps a second place finish behind GM
Ian Rogers at the 1992 Sydney Open--until his recent two
successes.
He earned his first GM norm several months ago by winning a
FIDE Category 12 tournament (average rating of about 2550)
held in Budapest. More recently, in June, Leko finished in an
impressive third place tie at the Leon International in
Spain. The latter result was particularly noteworthy because
of the strength of the event--he tied with Anatoly Karpov and
the rising Bulgarian star Veselin Topalev, just behind
Russians GMs Leonid Yudasin and Alexey Vyzmanavin.
In an interview which appeared in NEW IN CHESS (#4, 1992)
Leko seemed to be similar to others his own age, with the
exception of a few qualities that can be expected of a
prodigy: he's already fluent in another language (German) and
he exhibits the brashness of youth. Not only is his future
goal to win the World Championship but he predicted that he
will be playing Anand for the 1999 title!
Leko had an opportunity to exhibit his attacking prowess
against GM Josef Horvath at Budapest.
